Traditional Portuguese Catapalana Recipe

This dish is named after the clamshell-shaped copper pot (catapalana) used to cook it, but you can also make it in a large lidded pan or Dutch oven.

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 500g mixed seafood (clams, mussels, shrimp, squid, firm white fish)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 ripe tomato, diced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • ½ tsp chili flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 100ml dry white wine
  • 100ml fish or seafood stock
  • Handful of fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)
  • Cooked rice or crusty bread (to serve)
